The Regiment Infantry Menno van Coehoorn was a Dutch infantry regiment that continued the traditions of the 3rd Infantry Regiment from Bergen op Zoom. This city was set up as a fortress by Major General of Major and Fortress Menno van Coehoorn and for a long time a heavily defended city. From 1977 it also continued the tradition of the former 4th Infantry Regiment from Leiden.
The regiment was established on 1 July 1950 as Regiment Mortieren Menno van Coehoorn, and is named after General Menno van Coehoorn (1641 - 1704). Van Coehoorn was the designer of the mortar of 13 inches (about 33 cm). Already in 1953 it is renamed in Regiment Infanterie Menno van Coehoorn (RIMvC).
As part of the upcoming mechanization, the name of the ready infantry battalions (Infbat) was changed to Armored Infantry Battalion (Painfbat) on 1 November 1960.
The 47 Painfbat RIMvC was equipped with the AMX-PRI from 1963, which was replaced in 1978 by the YPR-765. [2]
The mobilisable 46 Painfbat RIMvC (53 Painfbrig of 1 LK) belonged to the RI Menno van Coehoorn, because it was filled with personnel who had spent the ready service at 47 Painfbat RIMvC. [3]
In 1977, the tradition of the former 4th Infantry Regiment from Leiden (the "dirty four") was transferred to RI Menno van Coehoorn. [4] To the banner of the RI Menno van Coehoorn the cravatten of 4 R.I. confirmed with the inscriptions: "4 R.I. Valkenburg 1940" and "4 R.I. Java 1946-1949". [4]
In 6 October 1995 RI Menno van Coehoorn is dissolved. [4] The last battalion of this regiment was 47 Painfbat RIMvC, stationed in the Johannes Post barracks in Havelte. From 1993 to 1997 (the dissolution) the traditions and name were continued at 451 Infanterie Beveiligingiging RIMvC. [5]
The banner is imposed in the Infantry Museum in Harskamp.
