Beret made by COFABEBA in 1970
Re: Baretten in gebruik bij het Belgische Leger
The kaki beret was replaced for the TTR by the "gray" (officially "pearl gray") around 1990.
The black beret was only worn by 6 and 13 TTR.

6TTr and the Black Cap
History
For years an object of discussion in the Wapen TTR: the black cap of 6 and 13 TTr.
Below is a small explanatory text about this hat, eyesore, from some other units and Chefs.
At the re-establishment of 6 TTr in Aachen in the Taborra barracks on 17 May 1951 (Kader personnel on 21 May), the then 6 Cie TTr became part of the 16 Armored Division.
On transition from the British to the American organization, the 6 Cie TTR becomes an organic part of the Division.
Until July 1, 1952, the duties of Commander of the Division Transmissions and Commander of 6 TTr were separated.
From that date, a small structure change will be made in the unit and one and the same person will now perform both functions.
This makes Major Riche the successor of the first commander of the 6 Cie TTr, Captain Van Der Auwera.
It is from this surrender of command that the personnel of 6 TTr will wear the black cap.
A curious anecdote is attached to this fact, personally told by the first commander of the 6 Cie TTr, Captain Van Der Auwera.
When Captain Van Der Auwera introduced himself to the Division Commander with his officers after the formation of the unit, one of the juvenile officers asks the Chief of Staff of the Division, or 6 TTr, now that they are part of the Division Headquarters, now may also wear the black hat. To which the then Chief of Staff replied that this is indeed allowed, on the condition that "the black cap was worthy to wear."
Captain Van Der Auwera, shaken by such an example of misplaced vanity, refuses to allow his people to wear the black cap as long as he is unit commander because: "A TTr can also wear a kaki hat with dignity."
It is therefore only with the surrender of orders that the new corps commander simultaneously performs a Staff function in the 16 Panzer Division (Nml CTTr) that the black cap takes the place of the khaki.
Hence the persistence with which this symbol of unity has been defended and cherished over the years.
Finally, the black cap of 13 TTr can be explained in this context.
The First Commander of 13 TTr, Commander Stevens, came from 6 TTr along with another part of his frame. 6 TTr was therefore godfather of the newly established 13 TTr and the link to the black cap has been established.
