Elementary Command Training (ECO)
Commands speak to the imagination: soldiers who carry out very heavy missions. They are soldiers who want to explore and push the limits of their ability. The Korps Commandotroepen (KCT) selects candidate commands based on those character traits. The ultimate test is the illustrious Elementary Command Training (ECO).
ECO elements
Well-known elements from the ECO are the survival week in the Biesbosch and the climbing week in the Belgian Ardennes. After 7 weeks, the climax follows: the so-called "weary". In that last week, the aspirants have to cover more than 200 kilometers, mostly on foot.
There are physical assignments between different stages. During the last night, they cover the 25-kilometer "commander's march" with a heavier load. This tour ends in the Engelbrecht of Nassau barracks in Roosendaal. Here they come in through the "Tears Gate" on Friday morning. The ECO is then over. Whoever has made it, can exchange the hat tie for a (beer-filled) green beret during a special roll call.
Preparation
The ECO is a selection phase in the process of becoming a command. That selection is not tender. The prospective commandos undergo rigorous training for 8 weeks under difficult physical and mental conditions. It is the intention that only the best remain.
The student dinner is the last decent meal. Then the ECO starts with the so-called "hat tie exercise". During this roll call, students will perform with 2 typical historical pieces of equipment: the hat and the toggle rope. In this way they wear the uniform of the first Dutch commandos during the Second World War in the Commando Basic Training. They got this outfit from the British in the Scottish town of Achnacarry.
This beret is not actually used by a marinier-commando, I bought this beret on
